You may be more interested in bathing your dog than she is, especially if she has been lying around in something unsightly outside. However, there are a few things you can do to make life easier for both of you and make this event more enjoyable. So, how to bathe a dog?

  1. Choose the best swimming spot. A bathtub is usually the easiest option, but if you have a very small dog, you’ll both be more comfortable using a basin or sink. If your dog has long hair, be aware that this can clog the drain.

  2. Be sure to comb her hair first. This will help remove any loose hairs and tangles that are harder to deal with when wet. Many pets enjoy being brushed as a reward, which can also help them relax.

  3. Put on an apron or old clothes. You will most likely get wet!

  4. Place a non-slip mat on the floor (especially if you have a large dog) so that neither of you slip when you put your dog in or out of the tub.

  5. Pour some warm water into the tub or sink. Dogs don’t like cold water very much (think of yourself taking a cold bath), but it shouldn’t be too hot either.

  6. The depth depends on your dog’s size, but don’t put too much water in as this can cause him to panic. The noise of running water can also scare her, so fill the bath in advance, before placing the animal in it.

  7. Pick up the dog and place it in the tub. She will probably try to get back out right away, but try to hold her back.

  8. Use a plastic cup or pitcher to pour water over it. You can use the shower head if your dog is not afraid.

  9. Pour a little pet shampoo onto your hands or dilute it in a little warm water, then apply it to your dog’s coat. Then gently massage the shampoo into the pet’s coat – make sure that the product reaches the skin. Try to avoid getting shampoo in your eyes or ears.

  10. Rinse the coat with warm water. Make sure you rinse out the shampoo well, otherwise your dog may develop dry skin.

  11. Take your pet out of the bath – be careful not to slip – and let him shake off the water. Then pat it dry with a soft, warm towel (or use a hair dryer if it doesn’t mind the noise).

  12. Give your dog a treat for being well behaved, then comb again.
